When Brahma woke up from his sleep, at the beginning of day kalpa, he saw the earth fully covered with water. The mountains that were burnt by the Samvartaka fire in the previous kalpa is merged in the earth completely. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a boar (Varaha), desilted the oceans floor by moving the water solution with burnt mountains to shallow places, and formed continents and mountains. The Varaha avatar appear, again and again, at the beginning of every kalpa and level the earth as before in the previous cycle.
The water solution with burnt mountains was sprinkled at selected places and a mountain cropped up in each of those places. He made the oceans and land area separate, equal in size and created mountains in earth for its stability. He created this earth consisting of seven continents along with the oceans and the mountains. He also created again the four worlds beginning with Bhu loka. He divides like this again and again at the beginning of every Kalpa. Despite the annihilation of the universe at the end of every Kalpa, god Brahma re-creates the world same as it was before. It is succinctly stated as "Dhata yathapurvam akalpayat". yathapurvam means according to proper order. punarvasuh (Vishnu Sahasranamam 152) is the one who lives again and again as the antaratma of all his creations, because he recreates the world with the sun, moon, etc., the same way all over again after each pralaya. People ask questions about the credibility in the description of Varaha avatar. Many people dismiss it as a mere story. There are questions like how Varaha can lift the earth? How it can survive in hot molten ocean? How it survives without a food chain since no other living being is present? The function (Dharma) of boar incarnation (Varaha) is to bring the earth back to its original position. God does this task by making use of his own creation. Earth worms, ants, termites, rats etc are good earth movers. Ants are ecosystem engineers. Anthills are the product of so many worker ants. The boar incarnation evolved from the molten ocean as a self born (Swayambhoo) creation and hence its body is able to bear extreme heat. The creation is like a single charge battery and hence it does not require a food chain to survive. For all other creations of Brahma (animals, plants etc), the natural food chain ensures a regular supply of energy (like a rechargeable battery). Lifting the earth actually means desilting the ocean floor and leveling the earth with mountains, oceans and continents.
